The Centre is currently exploring the use of social health insurance as a mechanism for financing long-term care for the elderly as a social-economic group. This is in an effort to partly facilitate the attainment of the Presidential mandate to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to ensure universal insurance coverage of all Nigerians by 2015.

It is envisaged that the resultant long-term care will provide financial risk protection to frail elderly Nigerians with disabilities through easy access to adequate healthcare at an affordable price.  In addition, the result of the study will also be used as advocacy instrument to ensure that long-term care becomes a pillar of Nigerian social policy in a bid to ensure the maintenance of the best possible quality of life for the elderly.
